The City of Salmon Arm has announced the creation of a new tourism marketing organization in partnership with the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society. The new two-year pilot project aims to attract more visitors to the city and will be funded through the Municipal and Regional District Tax Program.
According to the Baillie House, Merritt’s visitor centre, tourist visits to the city were down significantly last year. In 2024, 16.3K people visited the location, an 18% drop from the 20K visitors recorded in 2023. The city also reports that it has lost nearly a third of its yearly tourists since 2022.
The Government of Canada is providing over $725K through PacifiCan to communities in the Thompson-Okanagan to create outdoor experience and support sustainable tourism in the region. This funding will increase visitors to smaller communities while creating jobs and providing economic opportunities.

Start Here Penticton held a job fair on March 20, with over 50 employers hiring for hospitality, businesses, and governments. Employers hiring included City of Penticton, RCMP, WorkBC, Marriott, and The Penticton Indian Band.
Westjet has cancelled service between Penticton and Edmonton, leaving only its daily service between Penticton and Calgary. The news comes after Air Canada pulled out of Penticton Airport in January citing pilot shortages. A reason for the cancellation was not provided.
