Job Title: Shelter Worker
Customary Work days: Monday-Sunday
Customary Work Hours: 12h shifts, on rotation maximum 3 shifts/week
Rate of Pay: $18.00/hourly
Position Summary:
A Shelter Worker is responsible for maintaining a safe and welcoming environment in an emergency shelter setting. They are capable of conflict resolution and have strong working with others skills. Workers are able to perform half-hourly checks, covid-19 screenings, as well as follow agency policies and guidelines. Shelter workers are expected to maintain professionalism amongst staff and guests.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Doing half-hourly rounds.
2. Resolving conflict to the best of their ability in accordance with agency policies.
3. Ensuring that Covid-19 guidelines are being properly followed by the staff and guest (hand washing, maintaining social distancing, screening, etc?)
4. Participating in ongoing communication with other staff members. This includes a sharing information with the oncoming shift, and communicating with Oak Center Shelter managers about any unresolved issues.
5. Assisting guests to become orientated to Oak Center Shelter
6. Cleaning tasks as required
7. Attending and participating in bi-weekly staff meetings
8. Engage with people experiencing homelessness and other forms of marginalization through a collaborative, person-centered approach, grounded in harm reduction and trauma-informed practice
9. Raise awareness about services provided at the JHSF offices (and other allied agencies,) with guests.
10. Support guests through the JHSF intake process and coordinate access to needed services in collaboration with our partners.
11. Work with guests to understand their needs and priorities, while providing information and support, always respecting the client?s right to self-determination.
Qualifications:
1. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to trauma informed practice and harm reduction principles.
2. Ability to maintain information confidentiality and share information appropriately.
3. Confidence in asserting oneself and maintaining strong boundaries.
4. Capacity to work with people from diverse backgrounds/with diverse perspectives.
5. Established rapport building skills with a diverse range of clientele including individuals experiencing homelessness, living with mental illness, and/or actively using substances.
6. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and apply rational judgement when working through complex and/or urgent situations.
7. Effective, non-judgmental, interpersonal and communication skills.
8. Well-developed problem-solving, conflict resolution, and advocacy skills.
9. Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively
10. Willing to work flexible hours (position will include some evening and weekend work).
11. Related educational accreditation (diploma or degree) will be considered an asset, but is not required.
12. Previous work experiences in frontline setting involving harm reduction and/or lived experience including substance use considered an asset.
13. Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, crisis intervention and similar training are considered an asset.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 per hour
