Many community members visit the branch daily. We are located in an economically diverse community, with a large segment of children and teens attending the library independently. It is a vibrant community space for all, with programs, conversations and numerous partnerships.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESAs a Food Literacy Specialist at Halifax Public Libraries, you will:Plan, deliver and evaluate Food Literacy programs and events for diverse audiences - for branch, District and/or regional implementation.Facilitate diverse food learning experiences that improve community members' access to, and ability to prepare, healthy, affordable food.Provide regional guidelines and resources for delivering:healthy, affordable snacks to youth and vulnerable adultsbasic cooking and food literacy workshopssafe food handling practiceBuild relationships and maintain community partnershipsTrain and support staff in food literacy programming and food safetyRecruits, trains and oversees volunteers, interns and grant-funded staffAct as a resource in the area of kitchen design, food equipment and storage, food, nutrition, cooking and food safetyDisplay, promote and perform work duties in a positive and safe way and displays safety awareness at all timesSupport and show leadership by working to health and safety standards, following health and safety policies and procedures and encouraging colleagues to work to the same standards by reporting incidents, hazardous conditions and improvement possibilitiesDO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?Bachelor's degree, diploma, or certificate in a nutrition of food sciences related field such as Dietetics, Nutrition, Culinary Skills or Food Sustainability and two (2) years of experience in delivering and developing food-related programs.Another acceptable combination of education and experience will be considered.Required:Read and write EnglishExcellent communication, conflict resolution and customer service skillsDemonstrated ability to provide instruction and trainingExperience in food program planning and deliveryFood handling certificationKnowledge of nutrition and cooking skillsBasic computer knowledge and skills including:Functions of a web browserMicrosoft office applicationsSocial media applicationsIntermediate technology skills including:Willingness to learn and experiment with additional tools and technologiesWillingness to support others in learning technical skills and conceptsAssets:Awareness of community food resourcesExperience working with diverse communitiesFacilitation skillsTRAVELThe position requires travel between our various library branches and community sites within the Halifax Regional Municipality. Access to reliable transportation is necessary.
