Umbrella Multicultural Health Cooperative is a member-driven, not-for-profit, community health centre (CHC). Our members are people who face language and cultural barriers accessing health care. Our mission is to provide practical access to affordable and holistic health care services that are appropriate in culture and language for those without access to health security.
We work with a Cross Cultural Health Broker (CCHB) Model. CCHBs are multicultural, multilingual health care workers who facilitate communication between patients, service providers and health and social service systems.
Umbrella Co-op CHC is located in Downtown New Westminster.
Summary of the Position
The Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) at Umbrella Co-op will provide direct clinical services, including individual and group counselling, crisis intervention, and treatment planning for self-identified populations of racialized immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. The RCC will collaborate closely with CCHBs and an interdisciplinary health care team to deliver culturally informed care. This role includes working across the Clinics+ Mobile Clinic and Health Promotion programs, both virtually and in-person, with occasional Sunday work in the Fraser Valley area.
Key Responsibilities
· Provide direct clinical services, including comprehensive intake assessment, treatment planning, crisis intervention, and consultation/liaison with community agencies.
This includes:
- *Assessing and identifying immediate risks* to client safety.
- *Providing prompt emotional support* and stabilization to clients in crisis.
- *Utilizing grounding techniques* and other evidence-based interventions to mitigate anxiety or emotional overwhelm.
- *Collaborating with interdisciplinary health care teams* to develop and implement treatment plans.
- *Creating and implementing safety plans* tailored to the individual client, ensuring they have access to ongoing support and safety measures.
· Maintain accurate and confidential case notes and client records in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.
· Demonstrate mature clinical judgment and strong ability to apply critical thinking and self-reflective skills.
· Seek regular consultation and show openness to receive and integrate feedback.
· Ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards.
· Apply an anti-oppressive framework to all aspects of client care, ensuring inclusivity and equity.
· Maintaining calmness and clarity in high-pressure situations, ensuring clients feel seen, heard and supported.
· Engage with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, tailoring approaches to meet their unique needs.
· Participate in ongoing professional development and training as needed.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
· Must be a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) in good standing with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors.
· Minimum of three years of post-graduate clinical experience, including two years in crisis intervention and risk assessment.
· Proven expertise in trauma-informed practice and cross-cultural counselling.
· Familiarity with somatic practices such as mindfulness-based therapy, art therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
· Experience working in a multicultural environment with individuals facing barriers related to immigration, poverty, and mental health.
· Strong clinical judgment, interpersonal skills, and ability to maintain professional boundaries.
· Fluency in one or more of the languages spoken by our community members (e.g., Dari, Arabic, Pashto, Spanish, or Tigrinya) is an asset.
