The Naval Reserve is a component of the Royal Canadian Navy offering the part-time and full-time employment from coast to coast and worldwide.
*Why join?*
As a naval reservist you will have the opportunity to serve your country on a warship or ashore depending upon the occupation you choose. Travel locally in Canada or around the world while earning a paycheck. We have over fifteen exciting occupations to choose from. These occupations require a variety of skills which we will train you for. No matter where your interests lie the naval reserve has an occupation that may suit you. Everything from operating weapons and navigating warships to ocean diving or work in an office setting is possible for you should you choose to pursue it.
*Where will I serve?*
Our unit, HMCS Malahat, is located in James Bay, Victoria at 20 Huron street. Your training will begin here in Victoria at our unit but during the summers we will send you to either Esquimalt, BC; Halifax, Nova Scotia; or Borden, Ontario depending on your chosen occupation. The typical part-time work commitment is one evening per two weeks and one weekend a month. During the summer you have the opportunity to work on the east to west coast or at sea on a warship. You may have the opportunity to take part in mission at home in Canada or overseas. In emergency situations or national incidents you may be called upon, but the choice to participate in any operation away from home is always yours. Most Naval Reservists have careers outside the Canadian Armed Forces in a wide range of civilian occupations. Many are students who use the reserve as a means of adventure, tuition assistance and development of leadership skills.
*What is the enrollment and training like?*
The new expedited Reserve Enrollment allows applicants who meet security, medical and basic fitness standards to be enrolled in as few as 30 days from their initial visit to a recruiting centre.
Naval Reservists complete the same physical and military training as a Regular Force Members. Basic Military Training (BMQ) course is conducted in the summer following enrollment. This course provides the basic military knowledge common to all occupations. Further training will follow at your home unit. In the Naval Environment Training Program you learn the basics of fighting fires, floods, and general life aboard a warship. There may be opportunities when you?re fully trained to volunteer for advanced training with the Naval Security Team protecting ships in foreign ports. There you will undergo advanced tactical training which includes shooting, hand-to-hand combat, and advanced medical instruction. Depending on your chosen profession in the military, training lengths vary by job. Most occupations can reach their Operational Function Point (OFP) in two summers following BMQ.
