*About the Role*
Reporting to the CFO this position oversees the daily operations of the Finance Department. You will lead a small accounting team to ensure that accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, contracts administration, general ledger, and cash transactions are managed efficiently and accurately within our software systems. Your role will also involve enhancing team efficiency and responsiveness by providing on-the-job mentorship and guidance.
*What You Will Do:*
· Oversee daily operations and manage department staff, including organizing team activities, setting work goals, creating plans to achieve these goals, evaluating progress, and sharing information.
· Encourage team growth through performance evaluations, support individual development, and assist with personnel issues and problem-solving.
· Ensure financial transactions are processed accurately and on time to meet month-end close and reporting deadlines.
· Work with the director to develop annual department work plans and budgets, review variance reports, and communicate potential financial shortages or surpluses.
· Identify opportunities to enhance the skills of employees with financial responsibilities, promote financial principles and standards, create learning resources, and guide employees through financial planning, goal setting, and decision-making to align with VGFN's financial strategy.
· Assist the director in preparing consolidated financial statements and compiling monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial packages.
· Review and improve internal accounting policies, procedures, and controls to ensure a robust framework and safeguard VGFN assets, and assist with year-end audit processes to ensure compliance.
· Maintain the accounting system, handle daily accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and contract administration processes, and produce general ledger entries, account and bank reconciliations, and journal entries. Share and review financial statements with management and Council.
· Provide backup support during employee absences as needed.
· Support upgrades to Finance Department information systems and processes.
*What you bring:*
· An in-depth understanding and deep appreciation for Indigenous People and their history, culture, traditions, and languages.
· A strong desire to uplift and support our community.
· Bachelor?s degree in business, human resources management, or a related field, or an equivalent Post-secondary education in finance, accounting, or related field.
· Chartered Professional Accountant designation (CPA) is an asset.
· Considerable and progressive accounting experience.
· Experience managing operational budgets and work teams.
· Experience implementing financial frameworks and strategic plans.
· Advanced proficiency in MS Office, accounting and payroll software and databases.
